Parents Warned to Take Cheap Metal Jewelry From Their Children
Recently the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that cheap metal jewelry could expose children to high levels of toxic metals like lead and cadmium.
The agency recommended that parents take cheap jewelry away from children after The Associated Press found high levels of cadmium in bracelet charms sold at national and regional stores, including Walmart and Claire's. Nearly all the jewelry had been exported from China.
When the United States banned the use of lead in children's jewelry in 2008, Chinese manufacturers started to substitute lead with cadmium. Cadmium can hinder brain development in children and cause cancer.
The CPSC is currently investigating the jewelry cited in the AP story and promises to take decisive action.
